Swiping works much as it does on Tinder. The difference comes after a match. Either person can send the first message, and that message has 72 hours to arrive. Once it is sent, the conversation opens and the person who received it has 72 hours to reply. After that the two of you talk as you would anywhere else. The design puts a clock on both stages rather than leaving either one open.
What is Bumble designed for?
A match here needs a first message before it becomes a conversation. Bumble asks for less profile than the prompt apps and puts more weight on the reply, so the design favors someone who checks the app often over someone who collects matches and comes back later. It assumes you will treat an unanswered match as something with a clock on it.

Swiping, matching and the whole conversation, including the first message, are free. Nothing essential sits behind the paid tier.

The paid tier is built around volume and time: unlimited likes, everyone who liked you in one list, and tools such as Rematch, Extend, advanced filters, Incognito, Travel Mode and Notes.
