Is OkCupid right for you?
For the reader who would rather answer questions than write a bio, and who wants a reason beside every suggestion.
What makes OkCupid a poor fit?
Questionnaires are the price of entry here, and a short signup is not on offer: answering questions is part of the product, and the matching is only as good as the number you get through.
If OkCupid sounds like the right shape, the next step is an account on the destination site, and the page after this one explains the cost and what this site earns.
How does OkCupid work?
You answer questions, and for each one you say how much the answer matters to you. The app then compares your answers with everyone else and produces a percentage, so a match arrives with a number and a list of the questions you agreed and disagreed on. Dealbreakers, which remove anyone who answered a question the other way, are part of the paid tier rather than the free one. Matching runs on what people say about themselves rather than on what they do inside the app, which is the opposite of how the behavioral apps work.
What is OkCupid designed for?
Questions rather than photographs, and a match that explains itself. OkCupid asks you to answer and then to say how much each answer matters, and the match it shows you carries a percentage and the questions behind it, so the design asks for real work before it gives anything back. It suits anyone who would rather state an opinion than hint at one.
Is OkCupid free?
Answering questions, browsing, and messaging. Contact is not held behind the paid tier.
What does the paid tier add on OkCupid?
The paid tier adds dealbreakers, a hard filter on the answers you will not compromise on, along with seeing everyone who liked you and getting the profile in front of more people.
Where free use ends on OkCupid
Messaging is free, so the free tier does not run out in the way it does on the subscription apps. Dealbreakers are where the free tier stops short: without them, a mismatch you feel strongly about is only a percentage rather than a filter.
Free-tier and matching details checked against OkCupid’s own help pages and the app itself on .
What does OkCupid do better than its rivals?
It explains itself. Every suggestion comes with the answers behind it, so you can see why the app put two people together instead of guessing.
Where does OkCupid work against you?
The questions are the product, and they are work. Stop answering and the percentage stops meaning anything, which leaves you holding a detailed profile that no longer describes you.
Why do people leave OkCupid?
Answering fatigue. The people who leave are often the ones who did the work and then found the app asked more of them than it returned.
Questions, then the paywall
The work goes in before the payoff: answers and weights turn into suggestions that explain themselves. That repays anyone who likes to state an opinion, and it asks a lot of anyone who would rather keep things light. The hard filters cost extra, which is worth knowing before the questionnaire.
Pick OkCupid if
- You want a match with a reason attached rather than a face and a guess.
- You have strong opinions and would rather state them than hint at them.
- You want to message people freely without a subscription.
When to pass on OkCupid
- You want to be using the app within a few minutes of installing it.
- You would rather not answer personal questions on a dating app at all.
- You want to be shown people without answering anything first.
How this review was checked
By signing up as a new user, working through the free tier, and reading OkCupid’s own help pages, most recently on . The review describes what the app asks at signup, how its matching produces the people you see, and where free use stops.
It does not report match counts, reply rates or member numbers. Those cannot be observed from one account, and this site does not publish figures it cannot check. The method page sets out all four steps and the limits of each.
OkCupid compared directly
One head to head page, against the open-inbox app that asks you nothing before you browse.
